Marmalade made the name travel, and almost none of the fruit that falls on the pavement here ends up in a jar. It goes to a digester and a compost heap.
The bitter orange trees that Seville keeps on its public streets are between 40,000 and 50,000, each yielding 45 to 130 kilos of fruit a year. Two counts, one company, and only one of them survives contact with the harvest figure printed beside it.

Every 1,000 kilos yield 50 kWh, the daily consumption of five homes, so half the collected weight never becomes electricity at all.
Half of every orange never becomes electricity
Each piece of fruit splits 50 % juice and 50 % peel, according to Emasesa, which works out at roughly 500 litres of juice and 500 kilos of peel per tonne collected.
Only the juice enters the digester, and the split is fixed rather than seasonal: it holds whatever the tree yielded that year. The peel and the unusable parts go to a composting machine and come back as fertiliser for fields in the province, so the headline rate of 50 kWh per 1,000 kilos is in practice produced by half that weight.
That split is also why this fruit is not eaten as it falls. With half the mass in rind and a juice nobody drinks neat, it belongs with the province’s other transformed products, the table olives of Seville and the olive oil of Estepa.
The pilot rate and the published rate do not match
The scheme started as a pilot at the EDAR Copero plant with 35 tonnes of bitter orange, run with the city council’s ecological transition department. Those 35 tonnes produced about 1,500 kWh, the daily consumption of 150 homes.
Divide it out and the pilot returned 42.9 kWh per tonne against the 50 kWh quoted generally, 14 % less, and the higher figure is the one used to project.
Two tree counts from the same company
One text gives 40,000 bitter orange trees across streets and parks. Another gives 50,000 street trees. The company also publishes yields of 45 to 130 kilos per tree and seasons of 3 and 5.7 million kilos, which turns those 10,000 trees into a load-bearing number.

The larger harvest divided by the smaller tree count needs 142.5 kilos from every tree, twelve above the company’s own ceiling of 130 and outside the range it publishes for its own arboreal stock. Divided by 50,000 it needs 114, comfortably inside the range.
Applied to a 5.7 million kilo season the high rate gives 285,000 kWh and the pilot rate about 244,300. The gap of roughly 40,500 kWh across those 5,700 tonnes is what the same company assigns to more than 4,000 homes for a day.
That difference is not academic. With the organic waste from its own installations the company reports covering 86 % of that plant’s needs and 70 % of the needs of all its centres, energy equal to the annual consumption of nearly 5,800 homes, so the street harvest is a top-up to a figure that already exists rather than its source.
A second check holds the series together. That 5.7 million kilo season was a 37.5 % rise on the one before it, which puts the previous season near 4.1 million kilos, the same order as the 4,000 tonnes given for the year the project began.
When the fruit falls
Ripening runs from late autumn into winter, which is Seville’s wet quarter. November, December and January take 256 of the 539 mm that AEMET records each year at the Sevilla Aeropuerto station, and the company attributes the yield swing to the year and the rain without publishing a formula.
How stacked that quarter is shows in the two extremes: December takes 99 mm and July 2 mm, so the months the fruit forms in are the only ones with real water behind them.
- Come between late November and February if the point is to see the trees loaded.
- Expect the streets, not a grove, since the trees are spread across the city.
- Treat the fruit as industrial, because half of it is rind and none of it is table fruit.
- Check the season’s rainfall against the twelve-month climate record if the harvest matters.
Where the trees stand thickest
The Patio de los Naranjos at Seville Cathedral is the oldest orange grove in the city and is walked on the cathedral ticket, €13.00 booked ahead and €14.00 at the desk, set out in the monument tickets guide. Beyond it the trees line ordinary streets, in the same season the city’s food markets change what they stock.
Two practical points follow for anyone timing a visit around that courtyard. The Giralda tower inside the same enclosure stops admitting visitors at 5pm regardless of when the cathedral itself closes, and the free Sunday slot runs from 4.30pm to 6pm with prior booking, which is the cheapest way to stand under those trees.
The Real Alcázar next door, at €15.50, keeps its own orange courtyards, so the two ticketed groves are a hundred metres apart and priced almost three euros differently.
