Seeing Doñana from Seville without a tour is worth it if you want marked trails, bird hides and a visitor centre with free admission, and less so if the draw is the restricted interior marsh that only guided 4x4 trips enter. The independent day costs one fare on line M-911 to El Rocío and a 1 km walk south to La Rocina, the one centre of the six you can reach on foot.
La Rocina sits at kilometre 27.5 of the A-483, the road that continues to Palacio del Acebrón, seven kilometres on, and to El Acebuche at kilometre 38.7. Both need a vehicle, as do the other three: El Acebuche is where the Iberian lynx breeding centre is watched on screens, and Guadiamar in Aznalcázar is listed by the Junta as temporarily closed. The Espacio Natural de Doñana joins a National Park and a Natural Park under separate rules, so a quota or a closure may cover only one. Plan the return bus before the outbound one, since the weekend timetable runs a single bus out.

What a 4x4 tour reaches that the bus does not
The bus route stops at the edges. The interior, with its marshes, mobile dunes and the Poblado de la Plancha trail, is open only on organised trips with limited places: the southern 4x4 itinerary that leaves from El Acebuche, or the boat trip up the Guadalquivir from Sanlúcar de Barrameda. Both are run by licensed companies, so they are booked ahead and priced at booking.
The two branches also fall under different rules. Law 8/1999 joined the Parque Nacional and the Parque Natural into the Espacio Natural de Doñana, but each keeps its own regime. The 4x4 itinerary runs through the south of the National Park, while the three cycle routes, El Arrayán, El Asperillo and Pinar de la Algaida, cross the Natural Park. Read each closure or quota notice against the figure it names, to avoid writing off the whole park when only one part is shut.
When to go, and when to skip it
Choose a weekday, because the bus arrives at 11:07 rather than 12:37. Choose February to mid-June or mid-September to October over summer, because the centre reopens at 16:00 and fills the afternoon until the 18:29 bus.
Avoid the week of the Romería del Rocío. Its date moves every year, and this year it closed La Rocina from 20 to 25 May. The centre’s calendar also closes it on 1, 5 and 6 January, 19 and 20 August and 24, 25 and 31 December.
Summer adds the walk to the problem. With a mean daily maximum of 36.0°C in July, the 15 minutes from the stop fall at whatever hour the bus arrives.

Which bus goes from Seville to Doñana, and when it comes back
Line M-911 belongs to the Costa de Huelva transport consortium and is run by the operator Damas. It leaves Plaza de Armas bus station on Calle Torneo and calls at El Rocío on its way to the coast. The whole day hangs on two times: 11:07, when the weekday bus reaches El Rocío, and 18:29, when the only afternoon bus leaves for Seville.
- Get to Plaza de Armas. Flying in, you can start from the same building: the EA airport bus stops 42 metres from the station, as explained in getting from Seville airport to the city centre. TUSSAM lines 03, C3 and C5 stop 36 metres away.
- Take the 9:30 on a weekday. It reaches El Rocío at 11:07, 1 hour 37 minutes later. The second weekday bus, at 16:00, arrives too late for a visit.
- On a weekend, plan around one bus. Saturdays, Sundays and holidays have a single trip, reaching El Rocío at 12:37.
- Get off at Bar La Guindilla. It is the stop nearest La Rocina, 1.1 km away in a straight line, about 15 minutes on foot.
- Ask the fare when you buy the ticket. Seville lies outside the zones of the Costa de Huelva consortium, so its single ticket table, which covers trips between Almonte, El Rocío and Matalascañas, does not price this route.
- Be back at the stop for 18:29. The return runs every day of the week; the only other weekday departure from El Rocío, at 10:29, is too early to use.

How long you get at La Rocina
A weekday visit gives you 7 hours 22 minutes in El Rocío, from 11:07 to 18:29. A weekend gives 5 hours 52 minutes, from 12:37. Take off half an hour for the walk to the centre and back.
The Charco de la Boca trail starts in the front courtyard of the centre. It is a 3.8 km loop rated low difficulty by the Junta de Andalucía, which puts it at 1 hour 50 minutes, so it fits either day comfortably.
The tighter limit is the centre’s own timetable. From 16 June to 15 September La Rocina opens 8:00 to 15:00 and does not reopen, which leaves 3 hours 29 minutes between closing and the bus. The rest of the year it closes 15:00 to 16:00 and reopens until 19:00, or 18:00 from November to January.
What you can walk to from El Rocío, and what needs a car
La Rocina sits on the lower course of the stream of the same name, the main source of water reaching the marsh. Inside are an audiovisual room and a reed hut housing an exhibition on the Romería del Rocío pilgrimage.
Outside, the Charco de la Boca trail follows the right bank of the stream past four bird hides. Purple swamphens, little bitterns and marbled ducks breed here, and purple herons and glossy ibises feed along the water when the area floods.
The Junta’s own advice for the trail is practical: carry water, sun protection and proper footwear, take a charged phone because coverage is patchy, and for your safety and the habitat’s stay on the marked path.
Five of the six centres are beyond walking range of the bus. Palacio del Acebrón lies seven kilometres past La Rocina on its own road, the H-9023, with an exhibition on people and the marsh and the 2.1 km Charco del Acebrón trail. El Acebuche stands at kilometre 38.7 of the A-483 plus two kilometres of paved track, and its rest area shows the Iberian lynx breeding centre on live screens.

Two names in that list need care. Guadiamar, the gateway to the Corredor Verde del Guadiamar, is shut: the Junta lists it under a temporary closure notice dated 1 July. And José Antonio Valverde is also the name of a centre beside the lagoon at Fuente de Piedra, in Málaga province, so a search for the name alone returns both. The Doñana one is reached from Villamanrique de la Condesa, La Puebla del Río or Isla Mayor, about 25 kilometres along unpaved tracks.
